I went thru Sampson during the latter part of 1943. From there I went to Chicago to attend Aviation Mech school at Navy Pier. From there I went to the Philadelphia Navy Yard to attend Catapult & Arresting Gear school. I then was assigned to the USS Prince William CVE 31, an escort carrier until I was discharged in April 1946 from Lido Beach, LI. Anybody with a similar experience?

I just became aware of the websight when reading the newsletter. I think it is a great idea. I was at Sampson from March 43 to July 43, having caught the dreaded CAT FEVER and was in the base hospital for 4 weeks under the care of Dr. Hale and nurse Hardy or it could have been the other way around. My first company was C124 and after the hospital stay was C167. From Sampson I went to Fleet Service School (torpedo at Norfolk, the to the Keyport Naval Torpedo station for advanced torpedo school. After 2 1/2 months at Treasure Island I was assigned to the USS Rowe DD564 where I stayed until being separated from the navy at Sampson in F

Just read about the web-site in latest newsletter, so I thought I would visit. I am new on computer and am just learning the ropes. If any kid can do it, so can I. Steve Bull and I were the first two in the brig on a sunday in July about the 27th and did a survey as to what had to be done for a museum. Our names are in the first page of the book. I worked there for three summers until my wife took ill and am no longer able to devote the time. She is fully dependent on me for her care. I enjoyed working here with the other volunteers, and met some really great people. Nav43 MLA

Great page. The best way for all of us, to locate and bring into our organizations, all the former Navy men we served with at Sampson, is to "LINK" like we have now done. Let's improve and expand on it. Our Escort Carrier moto is, "One help ones self best, by helping others." This is why we Escort Carrier Sailors & Airmen have launched the search to locate all Navy, Marine and air squadron personnel, who served our country from 1941 through the Persian Gulf War. The effort has been launched, grab an oar and pull. Together we will attain greater success. T.P.

I visited the museum today (08/11/99)I enjoyed it very much and it brought back many memories of my own bootcamp days at great lakes 1963.I forgot about the sea bag inspection and how we used to lay the gear out. When I saw all the articles at the museum it really gave me a chance to show my wife how we did things in the navy. She called her dad, FRANK POPOWICH, when we returned home to tell him about it and he said "Why didnt you take me? I was there in 1943 for bootcamp. We never knew. Well Guess what? I will be coming back down there soon and I will be bringing dad.
