Was in "G" unit 12/28/44 through 3/17/45. Ended up on Kwajalain from Sept. 1945 through June 1946 after six months of radioman school at Bainbridge Md. I don't remember the unit number or the baracks number, I think it was too cold at Sampson for the brain to work. Keep up the good work guys.

I can see a lot has been done and a lot more to do. I was one of the many volunteers that work on the Wall of Honor name list. I keep getting E-mail messages from William Russell the past president. What gives and what is he after, does anyone know. He claims the organization is not being run the way he feels it should. I don't feel it is fair to Steve Bull and the other officers and Trustees to make such statements. I feel he should come to a meeting and voice his objections and not be putting it over the Web. Keep up the good work, you are doing a great job and I sure do appreciate it.

I have just started to read this web and I spent time at Sampson. I got to a school from Sampson when everyone else was going to the Amphibs. How? The Classifiction Chief was my Spanish teacher in Prep School. Some of us got lucky. My Skipper on the Nuthatch was the room mate of my History teacher and football coach Larry Kelly at Yale. Do you think that was luck?, my mother was on the Draft Board that drafted me.

I enlisted in October 1944 at age 17..went on active duty November 21, 1944. I was in Company 476, F unit. I think it was the lower deck. I'll never forget my first week at Sampson. It snowed the night we got there and I never saw the ground again except when we were sweeping the grinder area. I left early in February 1945 and was assigned to LSC Company 57. We went to Camp Perry, VA, then later to San Bruno, CA and then shipped off to Okinawa where we were attached to the 11th Special Seabees Unit. After the war ended I didn't have enough points to come home so then, I was sent to Tsing Tao, China and assigned to a floating dry dock. I was discharged July 1946 in Boston, Mass.

After logging in yesterday, I wrote some comments and even though I reread them a couple of times before submitting them, I still found some errors after submitting. However, I could not edit the comments. I recommend that you update the page structure so that the comments may be edited after submission, for updating if for no other reason. My original submission included two errors. One of commission and one of omission. I spelled my last name with an upper case A after the leading cap H, and then I forgot to mention that I was in F(Farragut) Unit, Company F424. Logging in a second time to correct errors may never get to the original comment paragraph. Best Regards, Larry L. Hawkins

I have attended the last two reunions at Sampson and have really enjoyed them. Met people at luncheons in our area and have joined them at the reunions. Was really impressed with the bronze plaques to be placed in the wall of honor. Also, through the Sampson News, I found a high school classmate that I hadn't seen in 57 years, and got together with him at the reunion this year (1999) In your efforts I am sure you have brought a lot of old friends together.

I visited the Sampson Museum today and was overwelmed by all that was there. My father James S. Stoops was stationed there in 1943. When my sister and I were looking around we noticed the books of pictures. We were both amazed when we looked down and saw our father looking back as us. It was as if he know we would be there that day and he was ready to say Hi. I have looked thru you site and will be back soon. I can't wait to tell my brothers about the museum and this site.

Joan Appleton Costanza Monday, 9/6/99, 8:27 AM

My father, Donald W. Appleton, was at Sampson from approximately August 5 - October 25, 1944. I know that only because I'm the unofficial family historian, and I have his dictated memoirs in my computer. (He lives in Syracuse.) Like many vets, Dad never really talked about his war experiences when we were younger. It has only been in the past few years that "Sampson" has become a familiar word to me. This past weekend we were home visiting and he got to talking to my husband (who's a Vietnam vet), and I appreciated even more just why a 55-year-old experience is powerful enough to be remembered as if it were yesterday. A whole generation of young men were plucked away from their daily lives. Some were lucky enough to come back, some were not, but none came back unscathed. I can only imagine how having one's head shaved can be a powerful reminder that one is no longer in control. Right now I am struggling with a 22-year- old stepson who finagled his way out of the Navy (twice!) because he "doesn't like authority." I'm not sure if he'll ever appreciate that what one loses in control, one makes up for in dignity. There are many men (and women) still alive who can rest assured that they persevered at a time that did truly test men's souls. Like many of you, my father no longer takes as much pleasure in material possessions as he does family and memories. That is why my Christmas/birthday gift to him (his birthday's on Dec. 26 -- very convenient!) will be many Sampson mementoes which I will purchase, in addition to a small looseleaf notebook to house his memoirs. May I suggest that producing a notebook with the official Sampson logo would be an appropriate addition to your ship's store. The internet is a wonderful vehicle for sharing memories, but I am sure that many of your veterans (including my father) do not have access to it. Perhaps many families would consider purchasing such a notebook and using it as an incentive to get together to write down the vet's memories for posterity. There are valuable lessons to be discovered out there.... And I was only going to write a paragraph! Thanks for letting me get on my soapbox. Sincerely, Joan Appleton Costanza
