I took my Boots at Sampson in March 1943. After 6 weeks training and a 7 day leave I came back for radio School. My boot training was in F Unit and my radio training was in H Unit. I believe my boot unit was 406. After Radio School I served aboard the USS Inch DE 146 as a RM2/C. Most of our service was in the Atlantic as a Hunter/Killer anti-submarine group with the CVE Croatan. After the war in Europe ended we went through the Panama Canal and ended up in Pearl. While there the war ended {the word invasion had been mentioned] and we transported battle weary Marines home to San Diego. My wife and I hope to visit the museum again soon. as a Hunter/Killer group with the CVE Croatan after 6 weeks and a 7 day leave I returned for radio . Afterschooweeks and a seven day leave I was back for radio school. My boot training was in F Unit and my radio training in H Unit. My wife and I have attended two reunions and camped on the Sampson State Park campsite. I believe my company number was F406. I arrived with 13 other barber baits from Brooklyn. I served as a Rm2/c aboard the USS Inch DE146. I am also a member of DESA.

My wife and I attended eight or nine successive reunions until her poor health prevented our attendance last year. I did visit for a week this past summer to pester the museum workers and my buddie responsible for boat tours. I feel an honest affection for Sampson as it was my first traning to be a man. Nothing is more important than maturity. We entered Sampson Jan. 5, l945. As a member of Callahans Country Club we were prepared to take a rowing boat tour of the lake. We did not see the lake uintil the sixtys. We were being saved for the really big pond. A trip to Bainbridge, MD for Hospital Corps School and other locations at Bainbridge we were transferred to USS Kearsarge CV33. Eventually we went home until early in the Korean War we were recalled and attached to the 2nd MAW, FMF. You former docs know about the marines. I could go on for most of the night, but let close by saying Sampson was a memory I cherish and will take to my final resting place.

I was very surprised to find out that you had turned part of Sampson into a museum. Living in West Henrietta we have seen nothing in the papers or on the TV about it, had to go to Ft.Pierce, Fl. Navy Seals Museum to find out that there was one in my back yard. Looks like a great site, we will be down to see you in the summer. I missed going to Sampson, and had to take my "Boot" at Bainbridge in 1952.
