I enjoyed the web site very much. I did not train at Sampson. I trained at Bainbridge MD April, May, and June of 1946. I do have a friend that went through Sampson. He served a prosperous stint in the U.S. Navy and retired from same.

I took my boot training thru Feb., Mar, April of 1945 at Sampson and, for an 18 yr. old who had never been away from home, it was the most wonderful, exciting, miserable, happy, sad, lonesome, fulfilling and proudest time of my life. That was over 50 yrs.ago and I still remember it well. We were the "Rooster" company, which meant we were Allowed to carry the flag which proclaimed us as the best marching company on the base. I remember those awful Tetanus shots, the Fri. night "smokers" swabbing with a tooth brush, the one day leave in Geneva, on which president Roosevelt died and so many other outstanding things too numerous to mention I'm so pleased to hear about your museum and if I get a chance I'd love to see it! My warmest regards to you all, Albert J. Page

This is the second time I signed the guest book. Did boot training at Sampson Jan. '44. Passed out on drill field graduation day. Spent 9 wks at the hospital there with spinal meningistis. After 30 day convalescent leave picked up another boot co. and had boot leave. Then spent time in ship's co. at media center. Later was in CASU (F) 42 at Samar in Phillipines. Can't remember Co. or Unit No. wsb Would enjoy hearing from any old Sampson Vets.

I was a boot in April 1944. Left Sampson In May and went to NATTC Memphis for training as an AMM. Left Memphis in DeC. 1944 and went to Vero Beach NAS where I was a plane captain for a Divebomber SB2C. Left there Feb.1945 and went to San Diego NAS where i worked as mechanic. Volunteered for seaduty and went aboard the USS Hoggatt Bay CVE 75 and eventually Became a plane pusher on the flight deck. So much for all my training but at age 18 it was a lot more interesting than being a mechanic. WEe took part in the Okinawa campaign and then went north to the Aleutian Islands allegedly to fly support for the Russians who were going to invade the Kuril Islands. Peace came before that. We then went to Japan and our planes flew support fot the Occupational forces invading northern Honshu Island. We eventually reached Tokyo Bay. After that we went back to the states and was converted to a troop carrier and made two trips to Okinawa returning troops to the states. We eventually went thru the Panama Canal and took our ship to South Boston Navy Yard to prepare her for the Mothball Fleet. Discharged in May 1945 as a QM 3/C. I later read that the Hoggatt Bay was sold for scrap in 1955 Many happy memories of Sampson and my naval career. I have been back to Samson many times and my wife has relatives in that area. happily retired now.

I went through boots Nov 29, 1944 to Feb 7, 1945. Believe company was 481, Unit F Barracks 19-U. Training lasted ten weeks. During the summer of 1945 I attended radio school at Bainbridge, Md. and was assigned as a Seaman Second Radioman striker to the U.S. S. A. J. Isbell, DD869. Discharged as Radioman Third Class Petty Officer in August of 1946. Our Company Commander was Chief Russell and we were known as Russell's Rangers. Remember a show the theatre group put on and the song, Why Does It Always Rain At Sampson. There was plenty of snow at Sampson that winter of 1944-45.

My father was a boot trainee at Sampson in either 44 or early 45. He visited the camp last September while attending a reunion of the USS Amsterdam (cl- 101) on which he was a plank owner. He was a little dismayed at the fact that most of the buildings and barracks were no longer there, although he enjoyed visiting. I know that his picture is included in the museum as a graduate of the camp, I would like to get some more info. His name is John B. Hooder. The reason that I am going this route is that you men from WWII are mighty tight lipped about your war years. Let the stories out--the younger generation just might enjoy hearing them and appreciate all that you have done for us and our freedoms.

I arrived for boot training November, 1943 (Sampson was like Siberia that winter) and was assigned to Co. 166, Unit C...then graduated Radio School, Class 16-44 as RM3. Following about 2 months shore duty in Norfolk, I was assigned to USS DuPont, DD152, later converted to AG80 after barely surviving Atlantic hurricane September, 1944, for the duration. I was recalled to active duty November, 1950 serving aboard USS Joyce, DER317 until discharged February, 1952. I would love to hear from any former shipmates out there.
